It was another evening with just me and Joseph this past Tuesday evening. Mig was at work and Marrisa at school. Joseph and I decided to open a marvel vinylmation and we attempted to predict where SPIDER-MAN Venom was... We were off each time.
A few minutes after that, Joseph asked me a question about my degree from college and if it related to my current career. Hmm, where is he going with this, I wondered.
He then mentions his interest in sound engineering.... I started to tense up.. He continues on to say what if he wanted to pursue music. I expresses that would be fine but he needed a supplementary learnings, like law, math, etc...
Suffice to say, the conversation ended on a sour note because of my close mindedness or uninformed-ness.
One thing that struck me all evening was his comment about how me and Marissa made such a big deal about college when he was not feeling that one bit at DeAnza...
The next morning I woke up a little before 4am and could not go back to sleep.
We did a drive by of both schools. On first impression, AAU has an impressive presence around the city and their branding and marketing being very polished.
Driving by AI, was a little disturbing. It is in a sketchy looking part of town... After a drive around it, it was clear that its presence was short reaching.
After touring AAU, I was overwhelmed. It was busy and the hustle and bustle was everywhere. While the building were older and with more character, I felt the housing halls felt musty. I was underwhelmed...

Then we walked about a one mile thru this Indian summer of SF.... As we neared AI, there was two blocks of sketchy and unsavory characters... Twice I was paranoid that someone was watching me and eyeing my tote bag.... Not a good feeling. While the civic center plaza has interesting events, not sure that masks the location of AI.
At AI, we had a nice one on one session with the Admission counselor. Joseph was able to speak about his desires. We had a short tour of the music and sound classes. That was cool to see the studio and sound board. The buildings at AI are more current and to me, contemporary and Silicon Valley-ish.

We proceeded back to the meeting room and Karen started the "paperwork", which was essentially the enrollment and application process. She explained that the school was year round and it would be possible to complete in three years. Total Tuition before any type of aid was $95,000 plus $900/mo for apartment housing. No dormitory or dining hall...
The graduating class for Spring Music and Sound School was 12.... Hmmm
Classroom sizes are small and intimate. There is career counseling and internship assistance.
She then asks if I wanted to pay by check or credit card for the application.
This took me aback... I handed my card for the $150 charge.
School would begin next week and Joseph may be able to enroll for that.... Suddenly, I felt things were going too fast...
We finally found our way on Bart so that we could bypass the yucky "gray area" we had walked thru earlier and was on our way back to the van.
Conversation on the ride home was interesting... Houyee had joined up with us at AI. She was more in favor on AAU.
We decided that on Saturday we would go back to AAU and take the Music and Sound Production Tour. Miguel and Marissa agreed to come with us. (happy momma day)

This time around, the streets were not as busy. It was quite pleasant. Not to mention the weather was amazing. I enjoyed the sound and music tour. This school is TOP NOTCH. So many positive features to mention. Tuition plus boarding would be about $150k for four years. The first payment due is January 24. First day of class is January 26. The school is open enrollment meaning that as long as you have a desire to study art and have a high school diploma or GED, you are accepted. The next hurdle would be financing this education.
What I have learned about myself and Joseph these last few days:
First, I am proud of Joseph for speaking up about what he wanted to pursue. I know I am set in my thinking but I usually "snap out of it" once I process the information. I was too quick to judge the "arts" and did not realize there are schools fully developed to educate and even give a Bachelor's degree. This was an eye opener. Would it have been a deal killer, I don't think so. I was not going to deprive my son of experiencing what he was craving.
I also realized that while my route from A to B is linear, there are alternative routes.. in this case, Joseph is creative in discovering different routes. I also understand that Joseph does need a little more nudging and guidance. I also realized that Joseph is very much like me with defiance and questioning (uh oh).
I am excited for Joseph to go to AAU and live in SF. At home, he is only being coddled by me. While he is young enough, I want him to learn the world and discover further who he is and stretch out his potential. This is interesting as I find AAU to be quite an elite and prestigious school, quite parallel to SCU!
There is an open house next weekend at AAU that Miguel wants us to go to and he wants us to set up one on one time with a counselor as well. Will keep posting as things unfold.
